Bud & Marilyn’s: A Love Letter to a Wisconsin Supper Club

Every detail at Bud & Marilyn’s traces back to a real place: The Spot, the supper club Marcie Turney’s grandparents ran in Ripon, Wisconsin for four decades. Turney and her partner Valerie Safran rebuilt that memory in Midtown Village — vintage wallpaper, honeyed light, Midwestern generosity — and staffed it with one of Philadelphia’s most respected kitchens.

The Story

Turney and Safran are the couple credited with transforming Midtown Village into a dining destination, opening a string of beloved restaurants and boutiques. Bud & Marilyn’s, named for grandparents Bud and Marilyn Briese, is their most personal project: an American comfort-food restaurant that treats nostalgia as a cuisine, from the supper-club decor to recipes that read like family heirlooms updated by a professional.

What to Order

Marilyn’s fried chicken defines the house: half a bird with warm biscuits, zucchini pickles, salted honey butter and hot sauce. The beer-battered Wisconsin cheese curds with pickled morita salsa and charred green onion ranch are the starter everyone copies but nobody matches, and the short rib stroganoff — hand-cut egg noodles, trumpet mushrooms, horseradish crème fraîche — shows the kitchen’s finesse. Retro cocktails and a thoughtful dessert list complete the supper-club arc.

The Space

Custom wallpaper drawn from a vintage pattern sets the “grandmom’s rec room” tone, warmed by wood, leather booths and low golden light. It is intimate without being precious — as right for a second date as for a table of old friends.

Who It’s For

Anyone nostalgic for family-restaurant warmth, couples who want comfort food executed seriously, and visitors looking for the Philadelphia neighborhood-dining story in one room.
