Ten dining rooms that never leave Center City, and four of them live inside a building that used to do something else. Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse took over a 1920s banking hall and kept the vault; Buddakan turned an Old City post office into a room with a gilded Buddha and a glass waterfall; Butcher and Singer sits in the brokerage house it is named after; The Dandelion was assembled out of salvaged British pubs near Rittenhouse Square. Here the room is part of the order, and dinner is the plan for the evening.
They differ by the occasion they were built for. Parc runs from the morning croissant to the evening steak frites, with rattan chairs facing the greenery of Rittenhouse Square; Talula’s Garden follows the farm calendar and a cheese board dozens of selections deep; Grandma’s Philly passes a grandmother’s Thai recipes around the table in small plates; Bud & Marilyn’s rebuilds a Wisconsin supper club in Midtown Village. Three steakhouses split one cut three ways, and Harp & Crown puts a soaring cafe over a hidden speakeasy. Choose by the job the evening has to do.

A big table is a question of architecture: Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse spreads across three floors and hides private rooms, the old bank vault included; The Dandelion breaks into four rooms; Buddakan is built around family-style platters and one long communal table. For a night with its own program, Harp & Crown has two bowling lanes behind the downstairs speakeasy, and Butcher and Singer flames the baked Alaska at your table. The terrace is Talula’s Garden and Parc, the only one here that also opens in the morning.
All ten serve into the late evening and work on Sundays; there the common ground ends. The list never leaves Center City, so outer neighborhoods are absent, and no Italian, Mexican, Japanese or Indian kitchen made it in: three steakhouses plus French, British, Thai and pan-Asian cooking take the seats. Nobody runs around the clock, mornings belong to Parc alone, and apart from a weekday lunch at Grandma’s Philly these are dim occasion rooms that want a booking.
