Talula’s Garden: Aimee Olexy’s Farm-to-Table Landmark on Washington Square
Some restaurants serve the seasons; Talula’s Garden answers to them. Aimee Olexy’s collaboration with Stephen Starr turned a corner of Washington Square into Philadelphia’s defining farm-to-table dining room — a place where the menu is written by local farms, the bread is baked in-house and the cheese course is an event with its own following.
The Story
Olexy’s résumé reads like a fairy tale of American food: Django, her tiny early-2000s sensation, then Talula’s Table in Kennett Square, whose lone farmhouse chef’s table became known as the hardest booking in the country. In 2011 she and Starr opened Talula’s Garden, named for her daughter Annalee Talula Rae, translating that countryside intimacy to the city. It has been a special-occasion staple ever since.
What to Order
The cheese program is the signature: roughly forty-five selections at any moment, served with house-made chutneys, wine-plumped dried fruits, candied and curried nuts, fresh fruit, salted caramel and local honey alongside Talula’s own baguettes and herb ciabatta. Around it, the kitchen builds fresh, modern interpretations of Mid-Atlantic cooking — vegetables at peak, careful seafood, elegant desserts — with menus that change as the farm deliveries do.
The Space
A garden patio strung with lights, hedged in green and made for long evenings; inside, warm wood, botanical touches and candlelight carry the same mood through winter. It is one of the city’s most requested tables for anniversaries and proposals.
Who It’s For
Celebrating couples, out-of-town guests you want to impress, slow-dinner devotees and anyone who orders the cheese course first and plans backward.
Good to Know
Do I need a reservation? Strongly advised — weekends and patio season fill early.
What is the restaurant best known for? The celebrated cheese program and strictly seasonal farm-driven menus.
Is it good for special occasions? One of Philadelphia’s classics for exactly that — ask for the patio in warm months.
Are vegetarians well served? Yes — seasonal vegetable dishes are a core strength of the kitchen.
Is there outdoor seating? Yes, the famous garden patio, weather permitting; it is the most requested seating in the house.
